Product description
Author: Anna Markiewicz
In the years 1693–1696, the young elder of Lviv, Franciszek Cetner (1675–1732), went on a grand tour, a foreign educational trip around Europe, during which he took lessons at the prestigious Parisian academy and visited the dazzling monuments of Rome. At the end of the 17th century, a similar journey was an important element of the educational canon of young elites from the lands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth; it was a necessary culmination of the entire educational process and preparation for a future political career. The book presents a reconstruction of the young man’s entire journey, and its starting point is the fascinating lists of expenses prepared during the main character’s stay in the centres of the world at that time – Paris and Rome. The author, based on rich source material, draws a colourful portrait of Franciszek Cetner and his everyday life, introducing readers to the interior of French and Italian inns, to music lessons with virtuosos of the baroque lute and to the Versailles of Louis XIV.
