Product description

Sobieski’s Moon and Shield exhibition. Heveliana ancient and contemporary art in the Museum of King Jan III’s Palace at Wilanów is designed to show, on the one hand, beautiful evidence of old scientific thought recorded in an interesting artistic form and its influence on art and science in the 17th and 18th centuries and, on the other hand, to remind that artistic and intellectual heritage is a stimulator of contemporary culture. Engravings, prints, old prints, medals – visitors will find them in the so-called the Great Banqueting Hall of Jan III, the highest room at the very centre of the palace, in the superstructure of the second floor, created as a viewing point, similar to the belvederes of Roman villas. The windows of the Banqueting Hall face east and west; they once offered a distant view not only of the backwaters of the Vistula on the eastern side, the distant town on the western side, the gardens surrounding the estate, but also the sky and the stars! This is the beginning and heart of the exhibition. The titular Moon, observed and depicted by Heweliusz as an etching print, delighting with the level of workmanship and plasticity of the imagined lunar craters, is a symbolic beginning of our presentation. Right next to it, the Sobieski Shield – Scutum Sobiescianum – a star constellation with which Heweliusz wrote the name of the Conqueror King in the sky will be shown. Descending from the Wilanów Belvedere and passing through the historic, preserved palace interiors, you can see both objects inspired by cosmological themes, dating back to the times of the Sobieski family, as well as contemporary visual and sound arrangements designed by contemporary artists, inspired by the research, thought and graphic works of the Gdańsk astronomer. Heading from the palace to the Orangery building, visitors will also see exhibition installations in the park, and in the Orangery they will find a condensation of contemporary artistic activities: sculptures, graphics, drawings, paintings, installations, forms of conceptual dialogues, multimedia and projections arranged on the plan of the eight phases of the Moon. The layout and names of the creators can be found on the plans and projections presented below. The author of the exhibition design is Prof. Barbara Kowalewska, visual identification was developed by Prof. Lech Majewski.
