Product description
Authors: Paweł Jaskanis, Hanna Jędras
Ensuring the safety of audiences and employees is a priority in museum operations. This type of activity is given priority over the physical and conservation security of the collections. But both goals can be achieved simultaneously by integrating most preventive measures at each possible level of threat analysis, risk prediction, use of supporting technologies and triggering the expected reactions of staff and the audience. These and other issues are discussed in the first part of the book constituting a summary of the conference entitled ‘Cultural heritage towards contemporary threats and challenges. Programs and directions of activities’, which took place in 2016. During the meeting, international cultural heritage security institutions and reports from rescue interventions in the Middle East were presented. In the Risk Management / Human Resources Management (in the area of museology) seminar, the plenary part was complemented by security audits, conducted in the form of workshops at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów in April 2017 by experts of the ICOM International Committee on Museum Security (ICMS). Articles summarising these activities are included in the second part of the book. The third part consists of internationally recognised useful guides and recommendations regarding the safety of museums and monuments, also during armed conflicts and in the face of other threats. This book can help museum employees and experts in the field protection and saving of cultural heritage in the assessment of existing solutions, their verification and development of prevention plans, and security systems adapted to the modern world.
